The Sochi Olympics are coming! I don't usually do much to incorporate the Olympics into my classroom, but this year will be different. This week my Scholastic book order arrived and I had ordered Hour of the Olympics by Mary Pope Osborne. My kids are really into the Magic Tree House this year!
Last night I read through the book and made a literature guide to go with it. After several of the chapters I found myself stopping to quiz my husband about the Olympic history I was discovering. This really is a cute book! Not much of a plot, but you learn a lot of interesting Olympic facts from ancient Greece. Of course there are the typical Jack and Annie problems along the way, but they don't have a big mystery to solve. The biggest focus lies in two areas - unequal treatment of females in ancient times and the origin of the Olympic Games.
I plan on reading this book with my reading class this week. We will take a break from our Journeys series while the other 3rd grade classes catch up to us. I thought this would be a fun way to incorporate the Olympics, but also hit key common core standards with my lower readers. Hope they like it!
You can see sample pages below and purchase the guide for yourself in my TpT Store!
Happy Teaching and go USA!
